iPhone and iPad chargers might seem interchangeable, but depending on the iDevice, they don't charge your gadgets the same way. The new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, however, can now take full advantage of the iPad's (higher) 12-watt charger to charge up in about half the time as it would take with the default iPhone charger.
As Cult of Mac explains, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus ship with a 5-watt charger, whereas the iPad charger is a 12-watt one. Previous iPhones (5 and before), when connected to an iPad charger, would still only charge at 5 watts.
Not so with the new iPhone 6's. They take advantage of the iPad charger's bigger power supply to charge in about half the time. (See this video from Japan for a comparison.)
Using the iPad charger shouldn't do any damage to your phone, although more heat could wear the battery down faster. Still, if you ever need your new iPhone at 100% as quickly as possible...just plug it into your iPad charger.
