The Samsung Galaxy S5 is the king of Android phones. But the new LG 3, soon available, looks to be an impressive device. Here's the rundown on which is a better bet for you.
Screen The LG 3 looks to be the winner here. It's got a 5.5-inch screen with an eye-popping 2560 by 1440 resolution and a pixel density of 538 ppi. The Samsung Galaxy S5 haas a 5.1-inch screen with 1920 by 1080 resolution and a pixel density of 441 ppi.
Size and weight
Despite its larger screen, the LG3 is only the slightest bit larger than the Samsung Galaxy 5S, at 5.7 by 2.9 by 0.3 inches, compared to the Samsung Galayx S5's 5.5 by 2.9 by 0.3 inches. Both weigh 5 ounces. So this is a tossup, unless 0.2 inches means something to you. It doesn't to me.
Both use the same 2.5 Ghz quad-core Snapdragon processor. So it's a tie again.
The LG3 gets the slight nod here: You can buy either a 2 GB or a 3GB version if you're willing to pay extra. The Samsung Galaxy S5 offers only 2 GB.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 comes out the winner. Its rear camera is 16 megapixel, while the LG 3 has a 13-megapixel one. The front-facing cameras are essentially identical: 2.1 megapixel for the LG 3 versus 2 megapixel for the Samsung Galaxy S5.
Water- and dust-resistance
The Galaxy S5 has got both, the LG 3 has neither. So the Galaxy S5 is clearly the winner here.
The Galaxy S5 comes with a fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor, and plenty of useful built-in software from Samsung, such as its S Health app, which is surprisingly useful. The LG 3 has none of it. The Galaxy S5 wins.
The bottom line
So which should you get? If a big screen is important, then clearly the LG 3 comes out on top. But if you don't need a near-phablet sized phone, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is better, with loads of extras such as water-resistance, fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor, and more useful built-in apps.
