Harvard preps free online MBA courses

Harvard MOOC Initiative expected to launch spring or summer 2014

More big news on the free online MBA front.

Businessweek reports that revered Harvard Business School is looking to move some of its vaunted MBA courses online - for free.

Experts say the effort is a "watershed" moment for the massive open online course model (MOOC).

“This is a lot bigger than meets the eye,” John Fernandes, Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business CEO, tells Businessweek. “They’re going to get high visibility with students all over the world. I don’t want to say it’s going to displace face-to-face education, but it’s going to be a big piece of the pie.”

Harvard's efforts, which the site reports have been in development since this summer, come on the heels of Wharton School of Business, which began offering its entire slate of first-year MBA courses free online last month.

Brian Kenny, chief marketing officer for HBS, tells Businessweek that MBA courses should be available in spring or summer of 2014. The courses would most likely be hosted on edX, through which the school already hosts free online courses branded under HarvardX.
