A new CareerBuilder study finds that 43% of hiring managers who research candidates on social media report they find information that prevents the applicant from being hired. That's up 9% from last year.
The top troublesome information found:
- Provocative/inappropriate photos/info – 50%
- Statements about candidate drinking or drug use – 48%
- Bad-mouthing previous employer – 33%
However, social media can be useful - if used properly - to help you land that job. Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources at CareerBuilder, offers the following advice:
Search yourself. Head to Google, type in your name and see what a potential employer would find.
Check your privacy settings. Ensure your personal privacy settings on social media accounts are up to date.
Showcase your talent. Mention awards and honors you've received, as it will prove you're well-rounded.
Watch your tags. Keep an eye on what friends post to your account or when you’re tagged.
