Need $30,000? Try referring a developer to HubSpot

One company has (way) upped the ante in the search for good software engineers

Send a good developer HubSpot's way and they may give you a pile of Benjamins

Are you a little short of cash for your summer vacation? Maybe you’re a recent college grad with a pile of student loans to pay back? Or you’re looking for a downpayment on a new house? Well, if you know a good software developer in Cambridge or Dublin (or one willing to relocate to either city) then refer that person to Hubspot and you could be rewarded with a $30,000 referral bonus.

The highly competitive market for developers is forcing companies in need of them to go to new lengths to find good candidates. Last month I wrote about a company offering a free puppy (well, really, $1,000 to buy a puppy, and a free year of dog sitting) as a bonus for anyone referring a developer to them. Now Cambridge-based Hubspot, which offers inbound marketing software as a service, and in the past offered a $10,000 referral bonus for anyone referring a developer (8 of which such bonuses were paid out in 2012, they tell me), has taken things up several more notches by promising a $30,000 referral bonus.

The bonus is available to anyone who refers a candidate who gets hired as a developer on their product team. Here are the official rules:

  • Referrals must be submitted to Hubspot using this form by July 31, 2013

  • The candidate you are referring must know you (no referring strangers!)

  • Your candidate must be willing to work in HubSpot’s Cambridge (Massachusetts) or Dublin (Ireland) offices

  • Hubspot must meet with your candidate within 30 days of referral

  • Your candidate must be hired within 6 months of referral

  • If you candidate gets hired, once he or she has been working at HubSpot for 120 days, you get the $30k

Easy peasy, right? If you know a developer to recommend, but you don’t need money for a vacation or to pay off student loans to buy a house, you could still put that $30,000 to good use in other ways, like, for instance:

If you happen to get the $30,000 referral bonus, be sure to let me know so I can follow up and find out how you spent the money - and maybe have a sip of that ‘47 Cheval Blanc.
