Razer accepting pre-orders for Edge Windows 8 gaming tablet in March

It's been a long time coming, but the Razer Edge gaming tablet/PC is finally here..almost.

We were first exposed to what is now called the Razer Edge at CES 2011 when it was called Project Fiona. Unlike many devices that have been simmering for so long, the Edge has stayed pretty true to form. In January 2011 we were told it'd be an Intel i7-based Windows 8 tablet that would cost under a grand.

Come March 1st you can order the Razer Edge for $999, with a ship date of late March. For your thousand bucks you'll get an Intel Core i5 Dual core based Windows 8 tablet with a 10.1", 1368x768 touchscreen. It comes with 4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB SSD. The Edge is made for games, and an NVIDIA GT 640M LE GPU with 1 GB of dedicated RAM helps it get the job done.

If your heart is set on the i7 you'll have to move up to the Razer Edge Pro, which goes for $1,299. You'll also get twice the RAM (8 GB main, 2 GB GPU) and twice the storage with the Pro (a 256 GB SSD option will also be available).

The game controller dock will be available for pre-order as well, but no price has been given for it yet. Also available will be a 'home console dock' and an extended battery pack. Unfortunately the keyboard dock will be coming later this year (in the meantime the Edge has a single USB 3.0 port).

As a point of comparison, Microsoft's Surface Pro offers an i5 tablet with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage for $899. It uses Intel HD graphics 4000 rather than a discrete GPU, but it has a 1920x1080 display. Kind of an interesting trade-off. For gamers the Razer is going to be the clear choice but for everyone else I think it'd depend on if you're going to be using it primarily as a tablet (go with the Surface Pro) or as a portable PC you're going to be docking into some kind of external display (I'd chose the Razer Edge).

Anyone tempted by the Razer Egde?
