South Korean IPTV operator integrates Google TV with its service

LG Uplus is offering an integrated Google TV set-top box that combines its own TV subscription service with Google TV

South Korean Internet TV operator LG Uplus has become the first IPTV provider to offer an integrated Google TV set-top box that combines its own TV subscription service with the Google TV platform, Google said Monday.

The set-top box from LG Uplus will be manufactured by group company, LG Electronics, an LG Uplus spokeswoman said Tuesday. Google's unit Motorola Mobility also makes set-top boxes, apart from mobile phones.

Google TV gives viewers access to Google services such as search and YouTube videos on their television screens.

With the launch, LG Uplus becomes the first IPTV provider to offer an integrated Google TV box for its subscribers, and Korea becomes the tenth country in which Google TV is available, Google said in a blog post.

LG Uplus subscribers have started getting the u+tv G service starting Monday, integrating live TV and 50,000 on demand titles with Google TV apps like Search, YouTube, Google Play and Chrome, according to Google.

Google has so far positioned Google TV as a platform integrated with the TV set or in the form of a "buddy box" which sits between an existing cable or satellite receiver and the TV. It has partnered with companies like Vizio, Samsung, Sony, Hisense and LG, which are putting Google TV software in TVs and set-top boxes.

"We'll continue to work with cable, satellite, and IPTV partners around the world to make consumers' TV experience even better through Google TV," it said in the blog post.

Google said earlier this month that music, movies and TV shows from its Google Play store would be rolling out on Google TV in a few weeks, allowing users to buy or rent content directly through the Google Play store on Google TV. Purchases made on other devices will also be automatically available on Google TV, the company said.
