Serious students, particularly at the graduate level, don’t roll the dice with their futures. They consider the job landscape, potential pay, career growth and more when they decide what field to study. There are many fruitful choices to make while in school that will lead to satisfying work later, but analytics is likely to be one of the best choices in the coming years.
As we know from the now famous McKinsey & Company report Big data: The next frontier for innovation, competition, and productivity, in the United States alone as many as 190,000 “deep analytical talent positions” will go begging and 1.5 million “data-savvy managers” will be needed in the coming years. McKinsey expects the demand “will exceed the supply being produced” at the current rate of those getting degrees or certifications.
Luckily, in the U.S., at least, advanced study in analytics is possible at many schools. For example, at Carnegie Mellon University you can earn a master’s degree in information management with a concentration in business intelligence; while you can study for your master of science in analytics at Northwestern University; and at DePaul you can focus your academic energy more precisely and graduate as a master of science in predictive analytics. There are many other schools offering similar courses of study. Some programs can be taken online through distance learning; others require you to attend classes on campus. All claim to be rigorous programs. All those mentioned, and many more, are accredited.
Following this academic path surely will be an excellent bet to place with your college tuition. In Ireland, for example, analytics jobs will be among the best paying positions in 2015, particularly if you want to work in the field of gambling. According to one report, Paddy Power, Europe’s largest bookmaker, will be hiring analytics experts then and now. And today, Harrah’s Entertainment, the world’s largest casino operator, has many jobs in all areas of the business that require analytics expertise.
Needless to say, the vast majority of analytics jobs will be outside the gambling industry, with the demand for talent in financial services, healthcare, and telecommunications far exceeding casino-related work. That’s why I say as much as anything can be certain in the future, getting a degree in the field of analytics is a sure bet for a great career.
