You may have missed the movie "Margin Call" when it appeared in theaters - the movie only made about $16 million worldwide after being released in October 2011. The movie stars Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany and Jeremy Irons, and follows a bunch of investment bankers over a 24-hour period during the early stages of the financial crisis.
While most people probably didn't see the movie, someone at Fixmo Mobile Risk Management may have, because they took the movie trailer for the movie and re-edited it to make it look like a movie about the dangers of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies. In the re-cut trailer (now entitled "Risky Business", not to be confused with the Tom Cruise movie from the '80s), we get to see the dark side of a company that allowed someone to bring an unauthorized smartphone into their company and causing worldwide economic collapse. I have mixed feelings on this. First, re-cutting an existing movie trailer and adding your own voiceovers to make it seem like a different movie is kind of cheesy - it might work if you're trying to be funny (witness the Pee-wee Herman overdubbing Batman trailer), but if you're trying to talk about a serious issue, it comes off differently. I kept thinking, why didn't Fixmo just hire a bunch of local actors and make their own trailer? They could still do it in the same style as the real movie, but they'd have their own script and message they could promote.
On the other hand, I like the idea of a video that addresses some of the issues surrounding BYOD policies and the need for a mobile device management strategy. If I was creating this, though, I would probably go for a more humorous approach to the subject (almost parodying these doom-and-gloom movies), rather than the scare-tactic method used by Fixmo. But that could just be a difference in tastes.
