SOPA sponsor Rep. Lamar Smith dismisses tech community criticism

Dear anti-SOPA people: your concerns are unfounded, your groups are illegitimate, and you have no specific arguments. Signed, Rep. Lamar Smith.

Rep. Smith, the chief sponsor of the Stop Online Privacy Act, has continually excluded technology experts from testifying about their SOPA concerns in his committee. Now he explains why, saying, "The criticism of this bill is completely hypothetical; none of it is based in reality." He also said no one has been "able to point to any language in the bill that would in any way harm the Internet." The same RollCall article describes Smith as "famously steadfast," and "stubborn."

SOPA remains in committee, awaiting the "markup" period of changes and revisions. At least one member of the committee, Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), said, "It's time to pull the nerds in." Evidently, Smith hasn't read the widespread criticism across the Internet, and has thus far refused to let dissenting experts, such as Vint Cerf and Leonard Klienrock who have come out against SOPA, speak to the committee.

Is this guy intentionally trying to piss us off? Baris Bicer on I wonder if Smith is operating under the assumption that the big lie still works? The problem is, he might be right. MondoGordo on Lamar Smith is a big-government Republican. He repeatedly blocks any attempts to reform the war on cannabis, possibly due to his ties to the Alcohol and Tobacco lobbies. Ian Campbell on This guy has voted against the following: *Funding to Combat AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis *GI Bill *Hate Crimes Expansion *Unemployment Benefits Extensions(several times) *Science and Technology Funding abrakdabralol on

This is politics

SOPA is a fundraiser. Once they receive enough political donations it will magically not get passed.

I sense a disturbance in the force, as if a million people were to cry out at how horrible some proposed legislation was and were promptly ignored...

Hey Lamar, as a fellow Texan, I can assure you that we who don't matter, will ensure that you won't matter in your next bid for re-election.

Why let facts get in the way of politics?
