I've got a couple of quick updates to last week's November gadget post. If you're anything like me you're starting to plan your holiday shopping and so forth, so I'm going to do my best to keep everyone up to date on launch plans and pricing.
First up, Barnes & Noble's Nook event is today and everyone is assuming what we were calling the Nook Color 2 will be announced. Thanks to the magic of leaks, late last week we heard a new name: the Nook Tablet. Engadget has all the details but the Cliff Notes version is that it's a $249 tablet going up for pre-order later today and with a launch date of November 15th or 16th (same launch window as Amazon's Kindle Fire, in other words). Physically it looks very similar to the Nook Color, but B&N are pitching it as a more general-purpose tablet. It'll come pre-installed with Netflix, Hulu Plus and Pandora, for example. Inside is a 1.2 Ghz dual core processor and it is assumed it'll be running a modified version of Android.
I don't want to spend too much time on the details since we'll know for sure later today (guess what tomorrow's post is going to be about?) but to lend credibility to the rumors and leaks, Best Buy picked this past weekend to cut the price of the existing Nook Color from $249 to $199. Coincidence? Possible, but not very likely.
Update #2 concerns the US launch of Samsung's Galaxy Nexus phone. AndroidCentral was sent a picture of a Costco inventory screen showing the phone's price of $289 on-contract. Assume from that it'll be $299 direct from Verizon Wireless. AndroidCentral wasn't content with leaking the price; they leaked the launch date, too. Actually, they leaked a few of them. To be fair, AC is sharing these with more than the usual 'grain of salt' warnings, but leak #1 says we'll see the Galaxy Nexus in Verison stores on November 17th. Leak #2 says sometime during the week of November 21st (keep in mind the 24th is Thanksgiving and the 25th is Black Friday).
It'd be crazy if the Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet and Galaxy Nexus all dropped on the same week! Verizon has so many Android phones dropping this month that in order to stagger them, I'm putting my money on that 'week of the 21st' leak. I'd guess that Tuesday (the 22nd). But I guess we'll see.
