Coming soon: Hugging robots?

Future tech show highlights emotion-enabled robotics

As part of his coverage at the Computer Human Interaction (CHI) show in Vancouver, IDG News Service's Nick Barber has been presenting a lot of new technologies that we may be using in the future.

However, I'm not so sure about the hugging robot. Researchers from Japan's Osaka University (again, Japanese scientists!) have developed a robot that can convey physical emotions through a phone call or e-mail system. The robots may be used with elderly patients in the future, and a small handheld version (called the Elfoid) is also being worked on.

The idea is interesting, but the video is a little creepy...
