Ever wonder which tech companies are worth the most? Wonder no more

A list of the 25 biggest public technology companies, by current market capitalization

In writing Thursday about AOL's rumored interest in buying Yahoo, I was surprised to see that Yahoo's market capitalization was 10 times that of its potential acquirer, which got me wondering about the market caps of other major tech players.

So I decided to compile a list of tech companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq in order of their current market value (as of Friday afternoon). I'll be curious to see if readers are surprised by what some of these tech companies are worth relative to others. Needless to say, all figures are in billions of dollars.

Here we go:

1. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) -- $283.1

2. Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) -- $218.7

3. IBM (NYSE: IBM) -- $178.0

4. AT&T (NYSE: T) -- $167.0

5. Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) -- $147.5

6. Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) -- $143.7

7. Vodaphone Group (NASDAQ-GS: VOD) -- $141.5

8. Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) -- $132.3

9. Intel (NASDAQ-GS: INTC) -- $107.5

10. Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) -- $96.7

11. Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) -- $91.1

12. Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) -- $71.7

13. Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) -- $69.8

14. SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) -- $63.2

15. France Telecom (NYSE: FTE) -- $61.4

16. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) -- $40.3

17. LM Ericsson Telephone (NYSE: ERIC) -- $34.6

18. Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) -- $34.1

19. eBay (NASDAQ-GS: EBAY) -- $33.8

20. Sony (NYSE: SNE) -- $32.2

21. Panasonic (NYSE: PC) -- $30.2

22. Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) -- $28.2

23. Dell (NASDAQ-GS: DELL) -- $27.9

24. Yahoo (NASDAQ-GS: YHOO) -- $22.1

25. Motorola (NYSE: MOT) -- $18.5

I could on with this, but I'll cut it off at 25 companies. I'm pretty sure I got them all, but if I omitted a company that should be in the top 25, just leave a comment and I'll add it in.

Oh, and as for AOL, it's worth a mere $2.7 billion.

If you really want to dig into this kind of thing, the Forbes Global 2000 is an excellent resource. It was published in April, so some companies have moved around on the list (for example, Apple was well below Microsoft when the list was published), but it gives you a good overview.
