Attachmate may keep 882 Unix patents, not Microsoft

Did the deal change, or the story about the deal?

Attachmate posted a short statement on Novell's Web site just before Thanksgiving, saying stories that Microsoft would get 882 Unix-related patents as part of Attachmate's $2.2 billion acquisition of Novell, are not accurate.

A filing by Microsoft to the SEC said it and a consortium of other funders were paying $450 million for intellectual property that appeared to refer to the Unix patents.

"Novell will continue to own Novell's UNIX copyrights following completion of the merger as a subsidiary of Attachmate," the message read, in part.

More to come after the weekend, no doubt.
