Removing Backup Files

Several readers have asked about removing the backup files left after a

Service Pack installation. As one reader says, "When you know all is

well, why leave the backup files around?"

OK, the original files are in a hidden folder named %SystemRoot%

\$NtServicePackUninstall$. First, we need to delete this folder. Click

Start and Run, then type "regedit" and press Enter. When RegEdit opens,

navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\W

indows 2000 Service Pack n. In this case, n represents the Service Pack

number. Delete the key labeled Windows 2000 Service Pack n.

Once you close RegEdit, you'll have a bit of extra disk space.
