Novell unveils XML portal offering for GroupWise

Computer World –

At its Brainshare Europe 2000 event in Nice, France, this week, Novell introduced an XML-based portal technology that will ship initially as a part of its GroupWise collaboration software later this year.

XML Integration Services will provide the basis for corporate portals, according to the company. It will transform information coming from various types of applications and serve it up in an XML format. The technology was released this week as an open beta.

Novell product manager Leif Pedersen said XML Integration Services will become a key component of the company's recently announced DENIM (Directory-Enabled Net Infrastructure Model) architecture. After shipping as part of a GroupWise update later this year, it will be added to other Novell products such as the iChain electronic business tool, said Pedersen. It could also become a separate product at some point.

James Kobielus, an analyst at The Burton Group in Alexandria, Va., said the tool is a much-needed addition to GroupWise. "They don't really have a strong set of server (application programming interfaces) right now," said Kobielus. But he said Novell's approach to adding XML to its messaging server is less complete than some competitors such as Lotus Development Corp. and Microsoft Corp.
