N+I: Symbol aims to get apps onto mobile clients

Symbol Technologies Inc. on Wednesday pushed its Symbol MSS (Mobile Services Suite), introduced at the Networld+Interop conference this week in Las Vegas, as a platform for delivering enterprise applications to mobile devices.

"Mobility is to the enterprise like networks were to the PC," said Bill Nuti, Symbol's president and chief executive officer, in a keynote address at the conference. Connecting mobile users to IT resources will unleash greater productivity, he said.

"It's really only about 30 percent of the time where ... our employees can gain access to those systems ... and those applications that live in the data center," because in many cases they need to be at their desks to do so, Nuti said.

MSS includes the Mobile Services Platform, a server to control the deployment of applications to mobile devices, as well as software development kits for writing software to serve those applications, and agents that reside on remote and mobile devices to monitor those devices and the software on them.

The system as a whole is intended to simplify and make systematic what has been inefficient, case-by-case development of infrastructures for getting enterprise applications out to mobile users, Nuti said in an interview following the keynote.

Networld+Interop continues through Thursday.
