Vodafone offers roaming data service in US

Enterprise customers of Vodafone Group PLC, Europe's largest mobile phone operator, will be able to send and receive data on the high-speed network of Verizon Wireless Inc. under a new roaming service announced Thursday.

Vodafone is offering business users a package that contains the Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS data card, which is designed for the operator's own 3G (third-generation) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) networks, and the new Vodafone Mobile Connect EVDO data card, to be used on its U.S. partner's EVDO (evolution-data optimized) network.

The package will be initially available in Germany, the Netherlands and the U.K., with the other Vodafone markets to follow next year, the company said.

The two-card package costs £120 (US$147) in the U.K. Customers pay a flat fee of £50 per month for 100M bytes of data, according to a Vodafone spokesman.

The cards, which will provide speeds up to 384K bps (bits per second), are available to enterprise customers through Vodafone's direct sales force.
