We all remember the episode of the original Star Trek series in which the U.S.S. Enterprise is fitted with a revolutionary new computer that aims to make the ship's biological crew obsolete. The ensuing action is predictable: Computer goes crazy, uses Enterprise to attack friendly vessels, Captain Kirk convinces it to self-destruct using logical paradoxes, etc.
So far, no real-life computer has come close to such a disastrous end. But vehicles large and small throughout history have included machines that aided in their navigation.
