Not-quite-GUIs in DOS

The world of IBM PCs lagged behind Apple in the GUI realm, but DOS apps could be a lot more graphical than you might remember. Many applications and front-ends for the DOS filesystem combined ordinary textual characters and the IBM PC's limited color capabilities in clever ways to create almost-GUIs. This screenshot is from Sidekick, an early personal information manager released in 1983.
