We have an article here on ITworld that looks at the value of the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro tablet. It made me wonder about whether or not there's really a market for these giant tablets. Do people really want to use a tablet that's this big? Or are such large tablets just a passing fad?

Smartphones aren't the only thing getting bigger -- so are some tablets. Samsung has brought out its biggest to date: The big 12.2-inch Galaxy Note Pro. It it something you should get, or is it overkill?

Let's start with this upfront: If bigger is better for you, you want this tablet. Its screen, at a full 12.2 inches, with 2560-by-1600 resolution, means that you can get serious word done on it -- after all, it's even bigger than the 11-inch MacBook Air. At its size, it's a true productivity machine. It erases the distinction that some people make between tablets and laptops, that tablets are for consuming content, and laptops for creating content. This device does both.

I'm not sure I see the point of the Galaxy Note Pro. For $700 you can pretty much get a laptop that would provide a real keyboard for productivity tasks. Why bother with a tablet if you can use a laptop for work instead? No tablet can match a good laptop when you need to get work done, not even a tablet this big.

For entertainment and fun, I can't imagine reclining on the couch with this sucker. It's just too darned big. Then again I am a bit of a luddite when it come to larger devices. I prefer thinner and smaller for the most part. I've found that mobile devices that fit in my hand (smaller phones, ipods, etc.) work the best for me. Your mileage may vary, however.

I took a peek at the Galaxy Note Pro page on Amazon to see the thoughts of those who had purchased it already, and I found that it's got almost a five star rating! As I write this it's had sixty two customer reviews and most seem quite positive about their experiences with the Galaxy Note Pro. So there's definitely a market out there for tablets this size.

All of this makes me wonder if we'll see an even larger tablet offered by Samsung or some other manufacturer at some point. If a 12-inch tablet is this popular then you just know somebody will make a 17-inch version and why not even a 21 inch tablet? Hey, the bigger the better apparently! Can you imagine the joys of using a 21-inch tablet?

Would you buy a tablet as large as the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
