Want to protect your privacy when using your PC or Mac at a WiFi hot spot, home, or somewhere else? Then check out these five great free VPNs.
This one has become my VPN of choice recently. It's simple to use, and has versions for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android. Even better, for me is that there's a Chrome extension for it, so that I don't need a separate client. You get 500 MB of free data a month. For $4.99 month or $49.99 for a year, you get unlimited data on three computers and mobile devices. I may well take the plunge into unlimited.
This one works with Windows computers, Macs, Android devices, iOS devices, and Linux machines. There are no limits of bandwidth and on data downloaded, although you get disconnected after you use it for three hours.
The free version of this VPN works only as a Chrome extension, but it's a snap to use. It displays a small icon of a shield in the address bar. Click it to show your connection status. If you're willing to pay, you get more bandwidth, clients for Windows and Mac OS X, and more.
This well-known free VPN claims that it's been downloaded more then 300 million times. It's available for Windows machines, Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Android devices. It's simple to set up, but you'll have to put up with intrusive ads. If you want to kill them, you'll have to pay for the "Elite version."
There's good news and bad news about this free VPN. The good news is that there are no ads, no bandwidth limitations, and no data limitations. The bad news is that setup isn't always easy. Still, once you get it running, it's nice to know you won't have to pay.
