Check out more than foliage this fall

Conferences can be great opportunities for networking and information sharing. While it's a challenge to break away from the responsibilities at the office, taking a day or two to connect with peers across the industry can be invigorating and uplifting, allowing you to return with a fresh and optimistic perspective on the doldrums of threat intelligene. At the MASSTLC Conference in Cambridge, the message of keynote speaker Dave Mahon was to not see each event as a failure. Rather, see each event as an opportunity to learn. That's exactly how I feel about conferences. Attending a conference is the furthest thing from a drag. Each is an opportunity to learn. Here are nine conferences I wish I could attend this fall.

The SecureWorld Series

While I'd choose Denver if I had my druthers, there are seven events in the lineup of fall events offered by SecureWorld.

The Oct. 6 All Clearances Cleared Job Fair is a hiring event for cleared professionals who may meet face-to-face with leading employers, have their resume reviewed by an HR professional and attend a recruiter panel presentation on tips for their job search. The event is 11 am to 3 pm at the Westin Tysons Corner in Falls Church, Va.

The Oct. 20 event is the CyberMaryland Job Fair, held in conjunction with the two-day CyberMaryland Conference at the Baltimore Hilton.

Don't overlook the EDGE2016

Presented by Sword & Shield Enterprise Security, EDGE2016 Security Conference is an emerging cybersecurity conference taking place in Knoxville, Tenn., at the Crowne Plaza Oct. 18-19.

Keynote speakers at the conference include Theresa Payton, former White House CIO, cybersecurity authority and expert on identity theft and the Internet of Things (IoT); and Kevin Poulsen, a former hacker once wanted by the FBI turned cyber security expert and currently the editor at Wired magazine.

Something for everybody at BruCON

BruCON, an annual security and hacker conference, kicks off with a training on Oct. 24-26, followed by a two day conference Oct. 27-28.

It's an interesting atmosphere for open discussions on critical infosec issues, privacy, information technology and its cultural/technical implications on society. Organized in Belgium, BruCON offers a high quality lineup of speakers, security challenges and interesting workshops. Additionally, BruCON also offers world-class, deep-dive technical trainings given by the most recognized experts with huge industry experience in their domain! BruCON is a conference by and for the security and hacker community. The conference tries to create bridges between the various actors active in computer security world, included but not limited to hackers, security professionals, security communities, non-profit organizations, CERTs, students, law enforcement agencies.

The eye of the fire

The seventh edition FireEye Cyber Defense Summit (previously known as MIRcon) takes place Nov. 28-30 at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. The event has previously hosted Neil deGrasse Tyson, Colin Powell, Gen. Keith Alexander, Gen. Michael Hayden, and more. This year’s event will feature speakers across four tracks (Incident Response, Executive, Tales from the Trenches, and Solutions) from Visa, Under Armour, Blue Cross Blue Shield, the City of New Orleans, and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems.
