    Last month, a faulty electrical outlet in my charming turn-of-the-century studio apartment sparked a fire while I was out of the house. Many of my gadgets were singed, and what wasn't directly burnt still suffered damage from smoke and/or water from the automated sprinklers. Truly, it was a geek's worst nightmare! My trusty MacBook Pro, iPad, Xbox 360, and countless other gadgets were bricked, including my primary backup hard drive (thank goodness for data recovery). So, for my first blog back at GeekTech I thought it would be apropos to compose this short list of fire prevention gadgets I only wish I knew about before the incident.

    Officially, it's the AWS GovCloud (US), a new service from Amazon Web Services organized just for the federal government.     I've been using CrashPlan's consumer offering for some time now, and have been very happy with it. So when I heard about their Pro version aimed at small-to-medium businesses (up to 200 workstations), I was naturally intrigued. Much like the consumer version, CrashPlan Pro (various pricing) works by installing a desktop client, which uploads your files onto an online server for safe-keeping in the cloud.

    I seem to be living in a technology Bermuda Triangle. Two weeks ago my media-center PC died suddenly, and two days ago my primary desktop went belly up. Sure, I was able to switch over to my laptop and get back to work, but for the time being my data was trapped inside the defunct desktop. At least, it would have been trapped, if not for my secret weapon: SugarSync.

    As I mentioned last week, I've suffered some fairly catastrophic hardware failures of late. Thankfully, no critical data was lost, in part because I use Mozy to archive the important stuff (Word documents, my Outlook PST file, etc.) to the cloud.
