I wouldn't worry too much about the end of mainstream support, but once it reaches the end of extended support, it really is time to move on. As a practical matter, there really isn't much difference between mainstream and extended support.

How can I watch Netflix on a laptop running Ubuntu? It would seem simple since you can watch Netflix on Android, and Android is Linux based, but it's not, at least for me.

I think at this point, it is pretty much speculative. However, there have been a few leaks and statements from MS people that suggest a few specifics, and we can guess at the release "window" (ahem) based on the release cycle of previous and current versions of Windows.

There are a few ways that you can do it.  Probably the best is to go log in to your ISP's customer portal (or whatever they call it) and see if there is a bandwidth usage total for your account. Most of the major ISPs have it on there somewhere, but you may have to poke around to find it.

You can actually do a lot of nifty things with NFC.  You can purchase little NFC tags, program them, and stick them all over the place to make you device behave in location specific ways.  For example: At home - ringer off, disable Bluetooth, max screen birghtness.  At office - ringer max, auto-synch on, open Evernote.

Knowing how secretive Google generally is about their data centers, I was surprised that they released street view images of the inside of some of them this week. Other than seeing a stormtrooper (and that Google has a sense of humor), what stood out?

I'm not too happy that Ubuntu 12.10 in going to include Amazon search results in Dash. It seems that every time I turn around, there is another little chip away at the privacy of the individual. Am I being tinfoil hat on this, or does this rub other people the wrong way too?

Nope.  I would consider $25,000 the low end budget for any app, and that's a simple app reusing a lot of code on a platform that designers are already familiar with.  Most quality apps cost much more than that to develop.
