In fairness, I don't think anyone is talking about making all of YouTube something you have to pay for, only selected channels. To use a cable analogy, it is as if you could get your basic cable for free, and only pay for HBO so you could watch righteous Game of Thrones action to your hearts desire.

I wouldn't worry too much about the end of mainstream support, but once it reaches the end of extended support, it really is time to move on. As a practical matter, there really isn't much difference between mainstream and extended support.

When you log-in to your gmail, scroll down to the bottom of your email list. On the bottom right, in tiny letters, it says, "last account activity." This will show when anyone last logged in.

How can I watch Netflix on a laptop running Ubuntu? It would seem simple since you can watch Netflix on Android, and Android is Linux based, but it's not, at least for me.

blackdog answers Re: Can anyone recommend affordable and reliable cloud storage? I need 4 TB worth. Thanks. Have you looked at Amazon Web Services? That would be a good place to start. For personal use (or SMB) JustCloud might be worth a look as well.4 weeks 3 days ago

We are looking at a couple companies for data backup and business recover solutions. Of course, every company has a "state of the art" facility, but here in the real world, what certifications and design choices are actually meaningful and important?

The greatest benefits are probably the rapid provisioning and speed with which you can deploy whatever you want. Here is an article that goes into a bit more depth about what a virtual network actually is.

I think at this point, it is pretty much speculative. However, there have been a few leaks and statements from MS people that suggest a few specifics, and we can guess at the release "window" (ahem) based on the release cycle of previous and current versions of Windows.

When I close some applications in OS X, like my browser, when I restart it will revert to the state it was in when I quit the application instead of starting back "blank". How can I make applications quit and not resume their prior state?

So-So. I've used VeriFace before, which I think may only be on Lenovo machines, and it logged me on quickly and easily. It's good enough for casual security, if that term has any meaning. It would probably be sufficient to deny access to the guy in your office who likes to play tricks on you.

Gmail has millions of users, and most of the people I work with have a personal gmail account, with few if any of them experiencing significant security issues. One thing that we have not explored as a company is using cloud based email, mainly out of security concerns.

I haven't seen too much that absolutely blows me away - not yet anyway, there is still time. Gorilla Glass 3 is one of the things that I look forward to seeing reach mass production.

The best place to start is probably the Google keyword suggestion tool. It gives you options to find keywords based on your website url, category, and/or words and phrases.

There are a few ways that you can do it. Probably the best is to go log in to your ISP's customer portal (or whatever they call it) and see if there is a bandwidth usage total for your account. Most of the major ISPs have it on there somewhere, but you may have to poke around to find it.

I don't know what your A/V set-up is like at home, but you could also use it as a media center. We have an old laptop connected to a good but also old receiver and speakers in the basement.

I know the basics of Joomla!, but I still don't know everything to really use it to the fullest. Are there any good tutorials or guides that people have found to be particularly helpful?

I actually did not know you could do it the way Christopher posted. Good to know. Another way is to go to the menu tab that is the three horizontal lines on the right side of the browser. Once you click the menu tab, the sixth option down (at least on my version of Chrome) is the zoom setting.

You can actually do a lot of nifty things with NFC. You can purchase little NFC tags, program them, and stick them all over the place to make you device behave in location specific ways. For example: At home - ringer off, disable Bluetooth, max screen birghtness. At office - ringer max, auto-synch on, open Evernote.

Is there a better way to preview the way a site will look on various platforms (PC, tablet, smartphones, etc.) than running emulators?

Knowing how secretive Google generally is about their data centers, I was surprised that they released street view images of the inside of some of them this week. Other than seeing a stormtrooper (and that Google has a sense of humor), what stood out?

I've only been around two of the options - JDA and RedPrairie. Both will do the job. I recall that RedPrairie can be challenging to integrate with the company's other products, but has been been around for quite a while, is powerful and does the trick.

blackdog asks What do you think about Amazon search results being automatically in Dash searches on Ubuntu 12.10? I'm not too happy that Ubuntu 12.10 in going to include Amazon search results in Dash. It seems that every time I turn around, there is another little chip away at the privacy of the individual. Am I being tinfoil hat on this, or does this rub other people the wrong way too?32 weeks 17 hours ago

blackdog answers Re: Is RIM's $10,000 developer commitment enough incentive for you to consider app development for the BB10 platform? Nope. I would consider $25,000 the low end budget for any app, and that's a simple app reusing a lot of code on a platform that designers are already familiar with. Most quality apps cost much more than that to develop.34 weeks 2 days ago

Sure, Python is still used pretty widely. I found a list of some of the internet companies that use Python to give you an idea. Some of these include reddit, Digg, Mozilla, Pinterest (django), and Yelp, among others. It definitely isn't just a space filler on your resume.
