A fresh perspective on big data, analytics and BI from the CTO of Sybase

Irfan Khan is Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Sybase, an SAP Company. Together with the architects residing within the technology offices, he is chartered with ensuring the voice of Sybase's customers and the need of the market are reflected within the company's innovation and product development. In addition to his CTO responsibilities, Khan oversees the evangelism efforts for Sybase. His evangelism group is responsible for seeding new products and driving new technologies within Sybase's most strategic accounts. Khan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science as well as a Master of Science degree in advanced computing from Kings College, University of London in the United Kingdom. In 2010, Khan received the InfoWorld CTO 25 Award and was named to the International Advisory Board of Cloud Expo.

The world’s vast troves of data are distributed. Increasingly, we need to access that information in real time. To get that real-time access, we must build advanced distributed data management systems – no simple task. But I assert that we have been evolving toward a distributed data management paradigm without our even knowing it.

Hollywood loves explosions. Few scenes offer more bang for the buck, literally, than a battle scene where a soldier screams "Incoming!" just as bombs start falling from every direction. CIOs must feel like that soldier when they look at not just the volume of data, but the type and source of data raining down on their organizations.
Overrated analytics?

It would never occur to me to ask seriously whether business analytics are overrated. And if I posed the question in this blog, you would already know my answer before I reached a conclusion. Not surprisingly, my answer is unequivocally no. If anything, business analytics are somewhat underrated.
