    In case you missed it, and many seem to have, the second annual conference took place in Nürnberg, Germany on Oct. 20-23. The conference, which had the theme "Collaboration across Borders," seemed almost completely non-existent in the US tech media.

    Last week's news that Nokia plans to roll out low-end Linux-based smartphones left a lot of people (including me) scratching their heads and wondering what was going on. Didn't Nokia just drop development on a mobile Linux platform called MeeGo?

    The developers of Linux Mint have altered the source code of the Banshee music player application to redirect all affiliate revenue gained from sales in the Amazon MP3 store to go to the developers of Linux Mint, raising the old argument: who should manage revenue from free software, upstream or downstream?

    Open source vendor GeekNet is turning a new page in the SourceForge story today with a proposal to the Apache Software Foundation to accept the Allura software platform within the ASF as a new Incubator project. The move may be a way to keep the code for Allura open if GeekNet ultimately opts to sell the SourceForge web site.

    According to Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst, the biggest commercial Linux vendor is planning on hiring at least 1,000 new employees in 2012--increasing the size of its staff by 24 percent.
