  • Oracle's Sun acquisition is a game-changer

    I can't say that it was totally unexpected, but it did happen rather suddenly. The deal between IBM and Sun collapsed, and Oracle wasted no time in swooping in to pick up the pieces with a deal to acquire Sun for $9.50 a share, or about $7.4 billion. What is surprising is that the deal is really not that much more than what IBM was offering.

The new set of Microsoft television commercials are a hit, and Windows 7 is going to once and for all put the Vista stigma to rest.

    Or not, depending on how you use it. I'm still amazed that Twitterers still think that sending out a microblog notice to tell everyone what they're eating or watching on TV, or communicating the unfortunate details of their latest hangover, is a useful thing to do.

    The Recession has put us in a bargain-hunting mentality. Luxury goods are always wonderful, but the rich are embarrassed to buy them any more. The only retailers that are doing well are the dollar stores and Wal-Mart. Could it be that our consumer society is reforming into a nation of cheapskates?

    Yesterday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates released information about an overhaul of weapons priorities. According to today's Wall Street Journal, Gates said his proposed budget would "profoundly reform" military spending. Almost every big defense contractor is going to be affected.
