    I'm a cable-cutter. Since cancelling my Time Warner Cable subscription last year, I'm no longer spending $1,000-plus a year for a vibrant mix of programming, including cubic zirconia shopping networks, colon-cleansing infomercials, and Ukrainian soap operas. Life is good.

    Boxee's having a big showing at CES 2011. First, Iomega added the Web TV platform to a trio of set-top boxes, and on Thursday Boxee announced an iPad app and the first Boxee-equipped TV from Viewsonic.

    Amazon has begun taking pre-orders for Boxee's upcoming hardware solution, the D-Link Boxee Box. But the shipping unit will have Intel inside, not Nvidia. Why? Nvidia couldn't handle 1080P streaming, we're told. Also, don't count on Hulu on your Boxee Box.

    Maybe you looked at Apple's new Apple TV and decided against it because it didn't support third-party content outside of Netflix. Maybe you weren't a fan of its lack of 1080p video support. Heck, maybe you thought, "It's just too square for my liking." The forthcoming Boxee Box could address all of those counts, and it's now available for pre-order in several countries, and with a couple of new tweaks.

    In a Wall Street Journal interview, Intel CEO Paul Otellini says Google TV is shipping this month. What does that mean for the Boxee Box, still scheduled for November?

    So it turns out (according to the Wall Street Journal) that Google still hasn't nailed down agreements with the networks for content delivery though Google TV. Without those agreements, is Google TV a safe bet? How about the Boxee Box? Does Boxee have agreements in place?

    As we reported Thursday, the Boxee beta has come to hacked Apple TVs. It's available via either atvusb-creator or aTV Flash ( Macworld rated 4.5 out of 5 mice )--two utilities that allow you to hack the Apple TV by jacking a USB flash drive into the Apple TV's USB port.

    Boxee has quickly garnered street cred for turning Mac and Ubuntu systems into good-looking media centers. Now, PC users can get in on the fun: Boxee has publicly released the free alpha version of its software for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. I took the software for a spin today and discovered that it transformed my PC into a sweet interactive television/radio/media player.
