April 11, 2012, 3:47 PM — Check out this 1977 film from AT&T, which showcases a new technology designed to improve the speed of yellow page ad creation. In the clip, we see a designer using a computer to design an ad, change fonts and text sizes, add in scanned artwork and other layout changes that would become quite easy about 5-6 years later with the advent of tools like Quark Xpress and Aldus PageMaker.
While the clip shows technology that seems old, archaic and painfully slow, the benefits of such a system at the time would seem to be super-speedy, considering typesetting systems at the time. This clip also reminded me of my first job post-college, in which I worked as a proofreader for a company that created Yellow Page advertising. I worked one day at that job, deciding instead to focus on my newspaper writing career instead. And look at me now!
