Here's another gem from the AT&T TechChannel team - it's a 1938 recruitment film for young women, encouraging them to take on the role of telephone operators. Once a booming industry, advances in direct dialing and other technologies made this job obsolete by the 1970s. Here's a couple of clips and bits honoring the telephone operator:

The most famous telephone operator, however, has to be Lily Tomlin's Ernestine character on the show "Laugh In". Here's a brief clip (from the Sonny and Cher show) for you young people out there:
