What alternatives are there to Square card readers?

    Posted July 29, 2014 - 7:02 pm

I’m showing some works at art fairs and usually sell a piece or two each time. I’ve only been able to take cash or checks, which has cost me some sales, so a credit card reader might be a worthwhile investment.

Will App.net be able to survive with no full time employees?

    Posted May 6, 2014 - 9:46 pm

I like the concept of app.net, basically a paid version of twitter with more features and without the advertising...and without the user becoming the product...so I was a little disappointed to hear today that the company has cut back to the point to having no full time employees.

How much should the political views of a company’s CEO or board of directors matter?

    Posted April 10, 2014 - 9:10 pm

Last week the CEO of Mozilla resigned after it was revealed that he donated $1000 to support Proposition 8, the California anti-gay rights ballot initiative that passed a couple of years ago. Now, there are calls to boycott Dropbox because former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has joined the board of directors.

Will Amazon’s increase of Amazon Prime from $79 to $99 per year cost them customers?

    Posted March 13, 2014 - 5:32 pm

I just got an email from Amazon telling me that Prime Membership would be increasing from $79 to $99 per year when my membership renews. That’s a pretty significant increase, as a percentage of the price, but on the other hand, it is only $20. Will this end up costing Amazon in the end, or was this a reasonable move on their part?

Mt. Gox, which was the largest trading platform in the world for BitCoins, has apparently closed down. Its website is a blank page, and the CEO has resigned from the board of the BitCoin Foundation. I’ve seen numbers thrown around claiming that $367 million worth of BitCoins may have been lost.

Did Netflix make a mistake by agreeing to pay Comcast to carry its content?

    Posted February 25, 2014 - 12:56 am

It seems to me that it would have made sense for Netflix to wait a while for the FCC to rewrite net neutrality rules now that the existing rules have been invalidated. Instead, Netflix apparently agreed to pay Comcast to deliver their content. I thought that’s what I paid my ISP for already.

    Posted January 29, 2014 - 7:09 pm

There are reports that Google is looking at selling Motorola to Lenovo for around $3 billion, when it paid around $12 billion just over 2 years ago. This seems like the loss of a lot of money, even for Google. Why would Google take such a big loss and sell a company it has only owned a couple of years for a fraction of the acquisition cost?

AT&T is planning to allow companies to pay for the data used by their apps so that it won’t count towards users monthly data limits. It seems to me like this would violate net neutrality standards. Am I missing something? This seems the very definition of treating some data differently. How does this NOT violate net neutrality?

Is Twitter overvalued at its IPO?

    Posted November 7, 2013 - 5:04 pm

Twitter is a company that has never earned a single dollar in profit, as far as I know. Yet it priced its IPO at $26 per share, and as I type this just prior to the close of the market on Day 1, it is at $45.04. Is this a realistic value for Twitter? That’s a P/E ratio of something like 25 to 1.
