EMC has announced plans to expand its Centre of Excellence research and development centre in Ireland, to create EMC Research Europe.

It is part of a 20 million (£17.5 million) investment the company announced in 2008.

Based in Ovens, in Cork, the centre will focus on EMC's existing research programmes into cloud computing, big data and data centres.

EMC Research Europe is the fourth centre in the company's global Innovation Network, and includes University College Cork as its academic research partner. Other sites are based in the US and China.

EMC has also appointed CTO Donagh Buckley, from its existing Centre of Excellence, to lead the research centre.

The company is expected to make an announcement about the creation of jobs at the new research site in the next six to eight weeks.

Separately, Asset Control, which provides data technology for financial institutions, has announced plans to create 50 new jobs at its operations in Ireland.

Graduates and senior developers will be eligible for the jobs, which will be based in Dublin. Regional development agency IDA Ireland is supporting the investment with an undisclosed sum.
