I had the pleasure of speaking with Rona Borre, the Founder and CEO of Instant Technology, LLC, a leading Human Capital, Technology Consulting and Training Services company based in Chicago, Illinois. She is often interviewed as a subject matter expert and has also been honored as an Influential Woman in Business by The Business Ledger and the National Association of Women Business Owners.
Given Rona’s impressive background in identifying top IT talent, I asked her what IT hiring managers are looking for in candidates. She suggested the following:
Knowledgeable of current technology
Having skills and knowledge of current emerging technologies enhances your marketability in a number of ways. First, it illustrates professional interest in keeping yourself up-to-date. Second, if the company uses this technology, you become a more attractive candidate to the company as you would not require additional training. Third, if the company is implementing the current technology, then you are extremely valuable to the manager/company because you can play a role in rolling out this new technology.
As CIOs are being more and more pressured to be personally business savvy, they are also moving their IT organizations closer to the business. Today, professionals within IT not only must be great technologists, they must also understand business objectives and have the ability to communicate with their business counterparts in a non-technical way.
Passion for their work
For many IT professionals, their career is also their hobby. That is to say, in addition to doing technical work during the day, they also read about, watch videos on and play with new technologies at home. They do this because they love what they do. This love reveals itself in the workplace in two ways. First, it’s generally easy to see when people truly love their work. Second, this home study dramatically increases the person’s general technology knowledge and experience using the software version not yet implemented at work.
Dedicated to make a difference
This is a frame of mind. This type of person wants to make an impact in the workplace. As a result, they tend to
• Take their jobs very seriously which drives their performance
• Be self-starters and out-of-the-box thinkers with ideas on how to improving processes, implementing new technologies, correct existing problems, and find other ways to illustrate their value to the company
• Being the first ones to volunteer for additional assignments and cross-functional committees
