September 25, 2008, 11:03 AM — Everybody's writing about the new Google G1 smartphone, available through T-Mobile at $179.99 with a two-year subscription. Without a contract, it can be had at $399. Are AT&T and Apple worried? They should be.
There is speculation on a price war. And while some posit that the Google phone appeals to geeks only while the iPhone will continue to be the favorite of the "cool", I don't buy it. The Apple "cool" image is wearing thin, and as more Google phones become available--and at lower prices and with more options--they will give Apple a run for their money.
