Mark Zuckerberg says a Facebook team is working on a search engine

During a TechCrunch Disrupt 2012 interview, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg says they already do a billion searches per day, and a team is working on a search engine.

Zuckerberg told Michael Arrington that, “we’re basically doing 1 billion queries a day and we’re not even trying.” He believes the social context gives users what they want, which is the answer to questions, not just a listing of webpages. “That’s one obvious thing that would be interesting for us to do in the future,” Zuckerberg was quoted saying in Wired.

No real mention was made of Bing, the search engine from Microsoft, a company already tied to Facebook in several areas and a small (1.6 percent) investor. Adding a Facebook search engine feature would be a nice response to Google's various attempts to muscle into the social network business.

Google is for searching, FB is not, at least for the foreseeable future.

this is something I have been expecting to hear sooner or later frm fb...... and there is a lot FB can do to compete with Google. I think it will be one of the many prodcts FB will have tht will take a go at Google

If Facebook developed a search engine that was somehow compelling to users, it would position itself at an advantage to Google and others, because it could deliver results in a fundamentally different and possibly more relevant way.

What I heard from Zuck

My read from Zuck's talk is that there is a focus on not only building services, but also building services that actually make money. So any search product would have to be connected to a lucid monetization strategy.
