Symmetrical and asymmetrical system design
Here is a small social experiment I like to engage in during technical design meetings. Whatever the problem under discussion, I will put forward a solution which involves splitting the problem into exactly *three* pieces. Without saying any more than that, a percentage of the participants normally shift uneasily in their seats.

Either way you look at it Microsoft Data Center management did not follow standards or best practices in this failure. In which case it makes me wonder more about the outsourcing of corporate data much less personal data.
