Say Bye-Bye to Tape

Let me first say thank you to the nice people in Charlotte who made me feel so welcome when I spoke at the ITEC IT conference there on June 25th and 26th. During the MasterMind Security Panel on the 26th, the issue of tapes came up in two different areas. The result? Time to wave goodbye to tapes of all kinds.

Disk is a better alternative

Disk is a better alternative if you do not need the video or data remotely or for disater recovery. If you need data portability, then you will need to replicate the data off to a hosted solution or use portable disk drives.

Also you can adjust the

Also you can adjust the quality and how it is saved with a digital system. Here are a few things I let my clients know.

• Store the fewest days that you think that you can at the highest quality setting.

• Purchase the largest hard drive that you can afford in your system. More storage allows more days of higher resolution images to be stored.

• A digital storage system compresses the images to save hard drive space. This causes approximately 30% loss of resolution. The played back images are not NEARLY as clear as the live views. By storing fewer days at the highest resolution setting you are optimizing your available storage space.

Where Google Chrome security fails: the password
I heard mention that the Chrome OS will have some sort of encryption available a la bitlocker. If it's possible to encrypt personal data using another password or key, then it may have potential for very secure data.... And Ubuntu has an 'encrypt home directory' option, perhaps google should follow suit.
