BlackBerry Storm vs. iPhone 3G: 8 Reasons to Pick the Storm

RIM's new touch screen BlackBerry Storm may be better suited for your needs than Apple's iPhone 3G. Here are 8 reasons why.

Anoter me-to cheap knock off

One reason not to pick Storm (that trumps all your other reasons): user interface

Plus iPhone is just so cool!
| reply

UI

i disagree how do you know storm's interface is not superior to iphone.its matter of time before somebody throws iphone over with more advanced interface. it is
not out of question
| reply

iphone is a cheap knock-off,

iphone is a cheap knock-off, too. LG Prada anyone.

Anyway, most people on Verizon who want a touchscreen phone aren't about to sign up with at&t to get it. The interface can be and will be cleaned up or made better. There is nothing wrong with SurePress. Once you are used to it, its great.

ANOTHER* to me* cheap comment

yes, u can call another touch screen phone a knock off but u have to realize that the touch screen idea isn't new and that it was going to come to phones eventually, apple just so happened to grab it first and good for them. This doesn't make storm a rip off for going for that idea as well, because it is obviously a good idea. it seems like ur also assuming that because apple is infamous for its great user interface that it would be unmatched in phones as well, well u obviously have never used a storm. I'm just going to say have an open mind and use a phone before u try and convince ppl how much it 'sucks'
i've used both, i own a storm (which i got after trying both), and its interface is dead sexy.
| reply

Storm Sux

The storm compared to the iphone 3g is like comparing chuck steak to a filet mignon. For a true comparison you can't rip either phone only list the facts and let the information prove itself.
The Storm:
- 520 mHz processor
- 3.2 MP camera
- ClickTouch tech. (or whatever)
The iphone 3G
- 620 mHz processor
- 2.0 MP camera
- touch screen
The iPhone 3G is a far superior phone. The app store gives the iphone 3g limitless possibilities. the next opstical you would have to over come is to jailbreak it. This gives you every option you would ever need for a mobile device far surpassing the blackberry storm.
IF YOU ARE STUCK IN CONTRACT with verizon and your phone is broke (casue you aint got a sim card to swap phone with (double gay on verizon's part)) then upgrade to it becase as far as verizon is concerned this sad atempt at an "iphone killer" is your best option!

iPhone Sucks

I had an iPhone for awhile, the only reason you think it's cool is because the media says its cool. It's a terrible PHONE, you can't run two applications at once, receiving email blows. The only reason the iPhone needs wifi is because Att's 3g sucks. So it's either be in crappy 3g "network", or drain your battery. While, I will say that the looks of the iPhone are definitely still better than any phone out there, for all practical uses the iPhone is one of the slowest, most buggy phones I have ever dealt with. People that own iPhones now are either recent customers who have not realized how bad it is, or just too superficial to give up the iPhone status. Apple should have stayed in the MP3 player department!!!
| reply

@Hank S.

I agree COMPLETELY. The iPhone is more of a fad than a functional phone. I returned my phone in less than a month b/c it was not as great as the ignorant many may think. Thank you for your comment.

shut up, your just some 12

shut up, your just some 12 year old who's never owned an iPhone. The email on iPhone is far, far superior to any crackberry, HTML email looks just like it does on my PC! Try that on your RIM POS. Problem w/Multitasking is that it drains your battery in a couple of hours.

| reply

get your facts right... in a year, you'll be switching over...

lets see, how can you make a compare apples and oranges when you have not even seen the storm... save you loser (i waited 5 days in line for an overpriced ipod) comments until it comes out... besides, have of the time, with AT&T you can't even get service with out standing on 1 toe, with your finger up your butt... get a life and wait till friday to come up with your allready failed attempts to justify your iphone to the storm, when its not even out yet, loser...
| reply

Who cares about HTML email?

Who cares about HTML email? What are you using it for? To pass back and forth youtube videos and pictures of your nieces and nephews from your Aunt? So, maybe after you grow up, you'll get a job that actually requires you to email, instead of using it to chat with your friends.
| reply

Agreed

See a lot of fanboi reviews for the iPhone 3G vs Storm. I'm amazed at the lack of truth in them. Here are some things I consider when purchasing a SmartPhone: #1. Connectivity and RIM has this part of the market nailed #2. Speed, Verizon CDMA may not be as fast as 3G but speed is nothing if your connection is spotty at best #3. WiFi, I have to say WiFi is not necessary and damned to hades if I'm going to pay for it! #4. Availability of useful applications and BBs have this advantage well over the iPhone. The micro USB connector, the expandable and removable memory, along with the ability to replace the battery. Yes, the Storm is far more advanced than the iPhone.
| reply

iPhone Suck? I don't think so.

I had a crack berry. It was OK at the time as it was the only device of its type. There was the Palm Treo, but it did suck. Then comes the Apple iPhone. Totally cool. No one even thought of putting accelerometers in a phone. How about the browser and the pinch and zoom feature, and built in iPod just to name a few. Then later, the apps store. Excellent especially if you're a pilot. There is excellent software out there. Great medical programs as well. Too cool. Then comes the Storm. Yea again, companies chasing Apple as Apple raises the bar. Until the Apple iPhone there was no touch screen, no built in web browsers as seen on the iPhone. Typical nay-sayers. Just like Microsoft with the iPod competing Zune. It's always easy to replicate then to innovate. Nothing on the Storm hasn't been done before. It either already exists on another phone or on the iPhone. The iPhone is really a computer you use as a phone. The RIM Storm is phone with some built in applications. In fact it doesn't even have WI-FI. As a pilot and a doctor, there is no equivalent software that runs on the Storm that could even match what the iPhone is capable of. It is a true computer in every sense of the word. The Storm has it's place as a phone and a PDA and nothing more.

iPhone 3G

Dude Dude Dude!
The people who knock the iPhone are the people who dont know how to use computers. If you know what your doing the iPhone has a million more capabilitys than the Storm will ever have. Unlimited Apps and easy to install. I have had many of phones and as far as a smart phone is concerned the iPhone has no comparison to what the media calls competitors. Ask me what I can do with the iPhone and I can do it. Theres no need to run multiple Apps. if your phone is fast enough like the iPhone and if you wanna listen to music on the iPhone while using or running other applications you can!
| reply

think again iphone users

I have been using my blackberry now since 2 months, and i must say it rocks. Computers main feature is multitasking, and iphone cant provide it cannot be like computer. Whats the use of having loads of apps in iphone store if you cant run it altogether. I can keep me logged into yahoo, gtalk, msn, AOL etc... messengers, whilst browsing. For iphone users knowledge there are thousands of apps available for BB storm, and yes you can use it at same time.
| reply

No..

iPhone does not blow, and AT&T's 3G network is faster than Verizon's. The iPhone is far better than the blackberry and you must be running an old version if you are dealing with bugs because I never have any problems with bugs more than any other thing.

I have had three iPhones so far (I broke two 1st gens) and it is the greatest phone I have ever had which is why I continue to purchase a new iPhone whenever I break it.

Iphone sucks? Are you feeling okay?

This phone is a breakthrough device that you could say has really set a bar and opened every mind in an amazing way which goes way beyond simple "pop culture" and a social "Im in" symbol. The apps are amazing, and while everything about this phone is "beta" the more patient man will see a future of instant
(1)knowledge at your fingertips on a moments notice
(2)A performance voice communication device
(3)A performance text device
(4)Music movies applications ... Endless flawless media
Well point being, ever so simple- If you don't see the Iphone for perhaps the most notable invention of the past 10 years, and EVERYBODY wishing they could be all iphone / Apple is. This opinion is formed by years of idiot proof tools for the less technical people and a powerfull innovative tool for the creative in of us- in one amazing package. All of their products have always lived up to whatever it was made to do.
Rethink what you have said here. Apple sets the standard for a lot more than mp3 players. Without them, who would everyone else try to imitate?
As time goes on Blackberry and Iphone will evolve into amazing devices that bring us a little closer together. AND this fact IS heartwarming.
| reply

Seriously shut up

I have been using both 3g and 2g, Never came accross that creepy error( mail blows) and with regards to 3g , its the issue with at7t not the iphone dude. you say u want this "you can't run two applications at once" and then u say "drain your battery", decide what u want to say. if you want "you can't run two applications at once" u cant save your battery.
"for all practical uses the iPhone is one of the slowest, most buggy phones I have ever dealt with".

Why should they have stayed

Why should they have stayed in the mp3 area? Is the iPhone successful or not? Ask yourself that.
| reply

did he actually just type opsticle!?? WTF

That's not a word, but I'm sure you could have looked it up on your iPhone dictionary to learn how to spell obstacle. Just another difference between iPhone users and Blackberry users.
| reply

Strom Sux why?

Because of a slightly slower processor? That's all you spec sheet tells me. However, that's offset by the clickable touch screen (you know, the "whatever"), which essentially will allow for a more intuitive UI, and elusive iPhone features such as Copy and Paste. And I'm sure when the next iPhone has a clickable touch screen also, you'll go around saying how it's the coolest thing ever and Apple invented it!

IPHONE CANT

IPHONE CAN'T....

#1-forward a text message (bb can)
#2-can't recieve or send a picture text message (bb can)
#3-can't email mutiple pictures (bb can)
#4-can't cut and paste (OMG) (bb can)
#5-if its cold outside you have to take your gloves off to use the phone (IPHONE touch screen not practical). (bb storm can)

I used to own a blackberry and decided to try something new so i went with the iphone... maybe if you're 16 and want to be cute its practical... but even then, cut and paste and forwarding text is important. These are basic BASIC functions. OH... #6-No FLASH on the iphone camera. so unless its the weee hours of the day or great lightening where you are, whats the point?

gotta go on my way to buy the storm.

oh how could i forget... #7-no function or capability to import contact information via email or text on the iphone. it has to be doen manually so if your memory is horrible do you know how many times you may have to click in and out of a screen to copy a contact name and number? God fobrbid you're adding an email address or address...

gotta go on my way to buy the storm... matter of fact any blackberry beats the iphone.

Proof Reading?

Is there a proof reading app for the iPhone, or at least a spell checker, looks like you could use one, bud. The iPhone is not a blackberry and the blackberry is not an iPhone. iPhone - gr8 for music, media and the apps and updates you have to pay for. Want the latest version of the OS for your iphone, with all updates that come standard when you buy the phone new? PAY FOR IT.
THe Blackberry is upgradable by the user - new os? UPGRADE for FREE! Want corporate email that WORKS? Blackberry - it sucks on the iPhone. I have set it up for people and they went back to their blackberry.

They are similar phones, but with touch screen (storm has far superior tactile feedback - meaning you press the screen in to confirm your selection), and one is geared towards the casual user who wants media and music, the other is geared toward the business professional who wants working corporate style email, along with some very cool functionality.

re:iphone vs storm

You can get a blackberry storm for other carrier by purchasing it unlocked or unlocking it. I use AT&T and I have a storm. The storm it'self has a sim card slot and is easier to reset since the battery is removeable. The iphone requires assistance to remove the battery or sim card which means more trips to your provider if the phone bugs out on you. The iphone also stores much if your data on a server and not in the phone, such as your address book. That means you need an internet connection to access that information. Being that I'm in Alaska and we have yet to be given 3G access requireing an internet connection is a big thumbs down. It's quite slow. Also, the removable memory gives the storm a higher storage yield and at less cost. I have also found that having a removable memory card makes transfering files from phone-phone or phone-pc much easier.

Storm vs. iphone - get ready for the thunder

Just the very thing said makes the Storm killer over iphone - the Storm has a FASTER processor than iphone. 624Mhz to 600Mhz and iphone is known for NOT multi-tasking good, if at all.
Storm is a true pda computer while the iphone is true ipod iphone, it can't sing and dance like Storm. Period. Unless, did I hear iphone had a camcorder for shooting vids? Didn't think so. In fact, the answer is 'no.' You can quote that too :-)

Storm kicks iphone's butt right on out the door with every conceivable feature and app. available to iphone + more, like turn-by-turn GPS navigation. Iphone for reasons unknown does NOT even have that available for its phone in buying it. Storm comes equipped for, well, a storm. And iphone? Well, liken it to a lightweight parka in a drowning rain storm.

Fair enough? Sorry, iphoners. The 'phony' is now out and the so-cute, so-cool iphone reality takes shape. And Storm looks like it too but for more navigation buttons which are one more reason to get it.

And Wifi? Oh please. It not only QUICKLY drains battery (how about that non-removeable iphone battery too?), it is not necessary with data plans required anyway and Verizon's 3G network is fast as any.

Get it?

And don't get me wrong. The iphone has its place but it just can't do video to do up your friends' party night or graduation or summer beach fun. It can't. Storm can, plus a 3.2MP camera is 1.2 megapixels more robust than iphone. Comparison? Can't.
Yes, the iphone has it's place and it's below the Storm in every conceivable category of comparison possible.
| reply

"storm sucks" post ???? no....

that's funny how you listed the stats of both phones(of which the blackberry clearly won over in comparison) and then toted the wonders of the iphone. dude, ur brainwashed! the iphone will be dead this friday.

Yes, the BlackBerry Storm is way better than the iPhone.

Yes, the BlackBerry Storm is way better than the iPhone.

In fact it is also way more safer than the iPhone. Yep, I meant safer. I have my reasons... and here's why http://smartphoneguru.wordpress.com/2008/11/18/blackberry-storm-a-safer-bet-than-the-iphone

I can't wait to get myself the Storm...

You have missed a few

You have missed a few points.

1) The iphone also supports multitasking.
2) The iphone also supports tethering, while not officially recognized by apple and ATT it isn't hard to get your iphone to tether. There are also rumors they could be adding this. It has the functionality, it just lacks the support as of now.

The storm lacks few necessary pieces as well. It doesn't have any wifi, which was just plain dumb on blackberry's part, we also have no idea how good the browser will be. If you are going to go up against something like the iphone you have to blow it out of the water, not just match it feature for feature, especially when you are joining the party years too late.
| reply

pros and cons,,, get an up to date list...

no tard, it does... go look it up on you tube, you loser...
again, you can't compare a stripper to your mom until you've seen both of them dance... its a blackberry tard, yes it does support multitasking... oh, and the browser is multi platform... again, if your gonna post 6 week old stats, atleast make sure they are up to date... dork...
| reply

What?

The iPhone doesn't support multitasking, not true multitasking. It also doesn't tether, can't use it like that. WiFi? My old BB Curve had that, man. I finally turned it off. Used it around the house but it didn't work any faster. If I wanted to use it out and about, you have to pay for WiFi. I have read that EV DO is faster than 3G...dunno about that, but speed isn't an issue. As far as Blackberry "joining the party too late"...um, really? iPhones have been around longer than the Blackberry? LOL, that's just silly!
| reply

No.6 reason (expandable memory)

The author of this article failed to mention that in the Storm's box of accessories it comes with a 8 GB memory flash card according to Verizon Wireless. So that should help tide us over until we save up for a 16 gig card!

we waited 5 days inline for the iphoney...

i'm sure that most of these slackys who are hateing were the ones who camed out with their parkas and tents for 5 to 10 days for an overpriced ipod and who are now stuck in their lame AT&T contracts wishing they could be a part of the haves, instead of the have nots... so they will continue to hate just like anyother loser does... i'll just sit back and laugh at all of these reasons why these losers have to post stuff when they have not even held the storm... i'm sure if they are good for christmas, santa might bring them one instead of a lump of coal... BY THE WAY, CHUCK NORRIS ROUND HOUSE KICKS IPHONES FOR LAUGHS...
| reply

horses for courses

I have read many, many, reviews about iPhone v Blackberry. One point that always seems to be missed is that historically BlackBerry is a business tool and iPhone is a general consumer tool.
Both companies might be blurring the lines towards the other side but it is still some way off until this is perfected.
You can't beat BlackBerry's functionality for email delivery. It might not look as pretty but its tight and lightweight, which is why carriers have unlimited data plans.
Apple is the undisputed king of consumer gadgets. They build interfaces that are simple and easy to use.
Both run different operating systems, which deliver appropriate performance on the hardware that they use.
Look at what your needs are before you make a choice. I would recommend against a BlackBerry if you are looking at it for personal use, and would recommend against the iphone for business use.

thank you for the REAL advice

i am interested in both the iphone and Storm and would rather "know" these products from actual users but i get irked when i see that others are trying to compete against which is better based on "people who don't know how to use this product are idiots" or such. i just want to know the basis without the bias!!!! thank you so much for clarifying on how either you want to use it for business or for the simplicity!!! Seems like a draw.

I am the dumbass who has been stuck with Sprint for the last two years. At last my contract expired this month and I am back on the market. I have to be honest. A lot has changed since I have been in the single mobil market. I heard that the internet was a great place to meet your mobile soul mate, but I can't seem to find the one I really want to be with. It seems like a toss up to me? Why isn't anyone addressing the monthly cost of this new two year relationship? After doing my field research I have learned that I will spend $30 less every month with Verizon for an unlimited plan. I think I am in love and I am going to pop the question this Friday...Storm, will you tether with me?
| reply

P.S.

By the way. Sprint sent me the Samsung Instinct as a last ditch effort to keep me in our loveless relationship. Now that is a phone that truly sucks. In fact, the only cool thing about the Instinct vs. the iPhone is...wait for it...the responsive click touch screen. Typing was a breeze compared to all my friends' iPhones, but I still sent it back after 21 days. My mind is still made up. I am going with the new RIM job and get the Storm because that is a Mobile I'd Like to Feel.

WIFI

Why is it that Verizon refuses to put wifi in any of the blackberry products... Can some one say why. And why I should not switch to AT&T.
| reply

Why use Wi-fi when u'll have

Why use Wi-fi when u'll have the legit fastest 3G network. BB requires a data plan anyways, so no need for wifi.

Replacements?

Did you know that the iphone doesn't have a warranty, so you're on your own if you drop it in water, crack the screen or get it stolen. They will only give you a new one if its the manufacturers fault, but thats quite hard to prove.

The Blackberry obviously has a warranty, although it might be expensive, but at least you'll have insurance when those accidents happen!
