Ubuntu et al
Two comments in criticism of Mr. Vaughan-Nichols' article: I read nothing about Fedora Core; and like many reviews, I think this article lacked a certain amount of balance as far as negatives and positives go for each distro.A few weeks ago, I decided to make a change from my favorite, OpenSuSE, to Ubuntu. Frankly, I have been scratching my head as to why Ubuntu has become the most popular distribution of Linux. This is because I have two boxes out of five which will not load Ubuntu 8.10. Yet these same boxes run Windows XP, FreeBSD 1.5, SuSE 10.1, and Ubuntu 7.10. Obviously, I have a couple of odd boxes or Ubuntu 8.10 does not play on as many boxes as earlier versions did. I've settled on using an old 1ghz machine for my Ubuntu 8.10 box, as it seems to load and run fine.
As for KDE 4, I fully agree with the author. KDE has always been my choice, but the KDE folks took some steps backwards when they developed version 4. It is much harder to find things in the menus, and whole lot more clicking going on. I guess KDE took a page out of the Windows Vista playbook. They should go back to 3.5.
Ubuntu has a few bugs that are pretty obvious. The first and most noticeable is the auto eth0 applet for networking. My network is setup for static IP addresses and every time I reboot the box, auto eth0 sets itself to DHCP assigned addressing. If I delete it, it is back again at the next reboot. This problem is reported all over the Ubuntu forums by many users.
I also find that unlike SuSE, Ubuntu does not have GUI's for a lot of the OS configurations, so there is more need to learn commandline operations. Ubuntu also locks out logging in as root. I suppose this is done for keep the end users from shooting themselves in the foot. I cannot say that I agree with that philosophy. Further, they say it is a security feature, however, I can testify to the fact that it is a security liability.
However, I remain committed to learning Ubuntu, both as a desktop OS and as a server.
