FAQ: The Transition to Digital Television

The biggest change to television broadcasting since the advent of color will occur on Tuesday, February 17, when radio towers will start sending a digital signal--though Congress is currently debating whether to postpone the date. Here are some common questions about the transition, and the answers you need to know.

Rural Areas

If I live in a rural area, say 30 miles from the nearest broadcast station will I have to have an amplified antenna to pull the digital signal?
Right now I can pull a somewhat fuzzy signal with rabbit ears.
Will I need to put up an outside antenna to pull digital? Is it even possible to pull a reliable digital signal that far?
Thanks in advance for any advice. Darryl.

Yes, you will need an antenna upgrade.

If your experience is like mine (and your staus quo is EXACTLY like mine) you will get NOTHING with your rabbit ears!! You will need an expensive outdoor amplified antenna.

No one has been talking about this. This is why the transition needs at least a 6 month delay.

DTV antenna

There are many variables as to how your DTV reception will be. In many cases it is better than analog. Most of the TV stations are operating in BOTH Digital AND Analog right now. Obtain a converter or new TV and give it a try, you still have a little time. Caution: Some channels move Feb 17, some even changing from UHF to VHF or VHF to UHF. Then a different antenna may be needed. At minimum, the TV or converter will need to be "Autoprogrammed". What makes this difficult is that TV stations retained their old channel number as their identity, Syracuse, NY channel 3 is actually a UHF (14-69) channel, but only identifies as "3". No one knows that they need a UHF antenna. In any case, the "Autoprogram" function should find the stations, if not repeat it.

Dropping Stations

I live in Queens NYC and have been having problems with DTV reception.
I set up a TV with a GE DTV converter box and powered digital antena box in September, and for a while it worked fine, but a week or two later PBS (New York City Channel 13) dropped off. Rescanned for channels and lost even more stations.
I recently replaced the antenna and rescanned to find all my reception (and others not received before) had returned only to have the stations start to disappear over the last week or two.
Is there an explanation why this is happening?

Either way you look at it Microsoft Data Center management did not follow standards or best practices in this failure. In which case it makes me wonder more about the outsourcing of corporate data much less personal data.

AISO founders envisioned a Web hosting company that was environmentally friendly. While the company employed energy-efficient innovations like solar panels, its infrastructure produced unacceptable power and cooling requirements. Find out how AISO leveraged AMD technology to overcome their challenge in this case study white paper.

In this whitepaper, Scalar explores the opportunity to change the landscape with respect to mission critical databases built around Oracle. Leveraging technologies such as Linux, high-end commodity processing power and Oracle RAC technology to architect, design, build and maintain database infrastructure that delivers maximum availability, reliability and performance at a fraction of traditional cost.

On a typical day, weather.com, the Web site for The Weather Channel in Atlanta, serves up between 15 million and 20 million page views. But in September 2004, when back-to-back hurricanes ransacked Florida, the peak traffic on one day more than tripled: over 70 million page views by more than 7 million unique visitors.
