Antivirus Test: A Quest for Nearly Objective Rankings
Chaz Sowers wants reliable, indepedently tested antivirus software with few false positives. But what really constitutes an "independent" test? Unsatisfied with lab ratings, he built his own malware testbed and put 35 AV products through the paces. Here is the story behind one man's AV rankings; your results may vary.

Either way you look at it Microsoft Data Center management did not follow standards or best practices in this failure. In which case it makes me wonder more about the outsourcing of corporate data much less personal data.

Antivirus Test
Nice summary and tests. Thank you for confirming the suspicions of many AV vendors. Symantec is dropping rapidly from its golden throne in many areas. I am curious about comparing Vipre from Sunbelt in this list. Feel like doing another?G Data - English Vesion
Howdy,I represent the Australian distributor of G Data. G Data have an english version - it can be found on the UK, Canadian & US distributor sites & the international site - soon on the Australian Distributor site.

Nice to see your tests confirm the high detection rates of the software

Surprised That This Is Being Posted Here
There were so many negative comments on this test on one of the original postings, I'm surprised that this is being posted on more sites. At least until concerns expressed on other site have been cleared up.Interesting results
I am not surprised at most of these results with the exception of AVG. We switched over to their suite of products in 2003 when Norton no longer performed acceptably.I own a computer consulting company in North Texas (15 years)
This is the first time I have seen AVG at the bottom of any review. I believe this to be either a failed installation or the result of not fine-tuning the software the way we do during installation. As we have been saying for years, most (if not all) antivirus products benefit greatly from researching their functions and properly configuring them for maximum protection.
We have been using and selling AVG in large numbers with stellar results. In fact, (and you can query our customer list of nearly 5,000) once we install AVG we typically don't hear from the client again until it's time to renew 2 years later. We do, however, enjoy a 25% referral rate as a result of AVG's performance on their computers.
The one thing I thought was missing was performance tests overall. We get a LOT of computers every day with hideous performance due to CA, McAfee, Trend Micro and Micro$oft's OneCare just plain pegging the processor.
Just my observation.
We are, as a result of this review, researching G Data.
Thanks for the well-written review.
I've posted a link in our blog.
You Missed the Point
The purpose of Anti-Malware is to stop infections from occurring. A scan is not the same as a real-time scan - you have given these vendors a much higher rating than they deserve. What you will find is that the failure rate is much higher when attacks are ocurring in real time versus a passive scan of malware sitting on a disk. The failure rate on new unknown malware is likely in the 80-100% range. Ghostnet found that only 11 of 100 attack vectors were detectable by leading AV. Your test methodology is incorrect and gives a false sense of security - implies that certain products are working 99.x% of the time. My company has developed the S Chip which ensures 100% elimination of all attacks. See www.valtx.comG Data
I've been using G Data for some time now (currently the English version 2010) and I fully agree with the result of this test: it's undoubtedly the best kept secret in the security industry!Source of malware collection?
I would like to know more about the source of your malware samples. Is it just a collection downloaded somewhere? Does it contain Windows samples only or also MSDOS samples? How do you know it is actually malware? How recent are the samples?replica bags
