The Internet. Who says you can't take it with you?
My first reaction to the new WikiReader device, which houses the entire Wikipedia on disk and enables you to browse it, was "huh?" My second reaction was "wow." Let's face it. If you travel, you'll find yourself with long stretches of un-connected time. If you had only one Internet resource available to you, the Wikipedia would probably be it.

Either way you look at it Microsoft Data Center management did not follow standards or best practices in this failure. In which case it makes me wonder more about the outsourcing of corporate data much less personal data.

This would surely be the next best thing to the HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy, wouldn't it?Does it say "Don't Panic!"
Does it say "Don't Panic!" on the case? That is exactly what I was
That is exactly what I was thinking!! I made a similar comment below.Color and Photos?
No mention of photo presentation. One important feature of wikipedia is that is has photos you can look at. I can't imagine an encyclopedia without photos. Yea yea, I know. Encyclopedia Britannica doesn't have a huge surplus of them but I grew up in the 80s where worldbook was my favorite thing to look at while at the library mostly because of the thousands of colorful photos that went along with the articles. If this device is only in graytone or black and white, then will it be able to show photos? Perhaps it can't anyway if its carry capacity is limited to 4GB of space. That could possibly hold the text of wikipedia but certainly not the photos. What about articles where showing a photo(s) is important to the article's content? How's that going to work? Maybe I'll hold off until I can get one on ebay for $20 someday down the road. Otherwise, I think it's an amazing idea and if I was traveling a lot, I would love it, photos or not. I would always have something educational to read! :)Just the beginning
The real story here is that the platform is open - and we can expect the community to make other content available for the WikiReader device. Just off the top of my head I expect that the books from Project Gutenberg might be made available, Bibles, and ...If our government had crafted the copyright laws in the interests of all of us rather than in the interests of Disney, we could have tons of other material that would find its way to this open device.
