    Posted April 12, 2011 - 10:54 am

Pamela Jones has announced that she will be retiring original content this May 16 on the legal analysis site that grew to fame within and without the open source community as it rose to do battle with the incredibly audacious claims by The SCO Group.
  • SCALE 9X across the snowy horizon

    Posted February 4, 2011 - 4:06 pm

The Southern California Linux Expo holds as a standard for what community shows should be. This is the community event that sets a bar for many of the other events to reach, with strong tracks for users and developers.
  • Software flaws don't negate "many eyes" in open source

    Posted December 17, 2010 - 11:57 am

As allegations about OpenBSD swirl around the open source community, pundits are wondering if the whole "many eyes, shallow bugs" idea isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's not the concept that's the problem, it's those bipedal carbon-based lifeforms who are mucking things up.
  • Community is Not Crowdsourcing

    Posted November 19, 2010 - 1:53 pm

Open source or open source-sympathetic companies seem to have this notion that communities are a tool to get something done. Whether it's building an app, improving some software, or just trying to establish product loyalty, communities can be seen as just a means to an end.

    Posted November 5, 2010 - 2:25 pm

How proprietary software and the money that comes with it will always be forever entwined with open source (and, by extension, free) software.
  • Report: Open Source Developers a Bunch of Moochers?

    Posted November 1, 2010 - 2:11 pm

A recent report from Evans Data tries to pin OSS developers as freeloaders. But with employers' demanding so much effort for the same pay, perhaps all developers are blurring the line between personal and professional work.
  • openSUSE Conference: A Time for Introspection?

    Posted October 27, 2010 - 12:27 pm

In case you missed it, and many seem to have, the second annual conference took place in Nürnberg, Germany on Oct. 20-23. The conference, which had the theme "Collaboration across Borders," seemed almost completely non-existent in the US tech media.
  • The Ongoing Fight for Diversity

    Posted September 8, 2010 - 12:34 pm

Diversity in the open source community is a touchy subject. For one thing, the global nature of Linux and the free and open source projects out there tend to make people think that there is built-in diversity right off the bat.
  • Free Software: Flattr-y Could Get You Everywhere

If you want to show your favorite free or open source software project a little financial love, Flattr is a new social tool that will let you do just that.
  • KDE: Join the Game or Watch the Game?

    Posted June 11, 2010 - 9:45 am

KDE e.V. is offering a way for individuals to support KDE development with their wallets. But are they going to really prevent these new supporting members from having any official say in KDE e.V.?

  • Google: Not Evil, But Jerks Nonetheless?

    Posted May 7, 2010 - 10:42 am

Accusations of Android being closed source have little merit, under the letter of open source licensing. That still doesn't mean Google couldn't get its act together and perhaps be a better open source citizen.
  • Oracle: Open Up or Watch Sun Set

    Posted April 14, 2010 - 10:00 am

Last week's departure of James Gosling from Oracle marks another milestone in a worrying trend for Oracle's continued standing in the open source community. The solution may be something from which Oracle historically cringes: sharing. But if they don't, a lot of value they got from Sun will set forever.
  • OSI Board Addition May Bring Needed Change

    Posted March 12, 2010 - 11:00 am

The OSI has been one of those organizations that seemed to fall short of its true potential, which is always a source of frustration; you want them to succeed, and don't understand when things go awry. It's particularly difficult to stand by and watch it happen to people whom you genuinely respect.

  • Mentoring in Open Source Communities: What Works? What Doesn't?

    Posted September 20, 2009 - 7:56 pm

Open source projects that want to attract new contributors can make significant headway by encouraging new, less experienced people in ongoing, personal relationships. The business-sounding word for this is "mentoring." The real-world term is "wonderful." Find out what it takes for mentoring to work in your project -- and the benefits your free and open source software (FOSS) project can hope to gain.
