The Pirate Bay is teaming up with Swedish researchers who specialize in copyright-, file-sharing and enforcement on survey designed to provide more objective data than that supplied by RIAA and MPAA to help counter rabid anti-piracy plunder-and-pillage copyright enforcement rules.

Pastebin tries to ditch hacked content; Anonymous is unlikely to leave

Anonymous text-posting site Pastebin has been the place hacktivists of all stripes have come to post their trophies. Files full of private data, source code from big vendors, threats to take down the Internet. If Pastebin goes straight, where will Anonymous' content go?

HR 1981, the SOPA alternative proposed by SOPA/PIPA author Lamar Smith, tries to give more power and less culpability to copyright owners already abusing enforcement system so badly that 67 percent of takedown orders come from competitors, not from simple mistakes.

Real-world example of how the Internet works under the sway of pro-SOPA factions: Online service business JotForm is shut down by the Secret Service Wednesday with no explanation, by an agent "too busy" to tell JotForm's founder why he was out of business. Thursday JotForm was back, with no idea what it did wrong, how to avoid doing it again or any explanation at all.

Massive SOPA/PIPA protest shift momentum in Senate, but not enough

The massive protest and letter-writing campaign organized by Reddit, Google, Wikipedia and a host of civil rights and Internet-openness advocates changed at least 13 senators' votes from 'yes' to 'no' on Internet-censoring PIPA, but majority is still 'yes' or 'undecided.'

For more than 20 years the entertainment industry has been basing estimates of content-piracy losses on numbers used in speeches but never found in actual studies. Winnowing through the rhetoric, one analyst found movie-industry losses are more like $90 million (with an M, not a B)

Death of SOPA may be only big victory for individual rights online in 2012

SOPA's assumption of guilt provisions were outrageously unconstitutional, but didn't emerge from a vacuum. In 2012 it seems as if cops, marketers, social networkers, service providers or anyone else with a use for private data claims the right to take it, or just the ability.

Feds drive censorship in raid to stop sale of counterfeit merchandise

As customs and sometime trade-law enforcer for the U.S., ICE is supposed to stop the sale of counterfeit designer goods. Does the right to shut down an allegedly illegal retail operation also give it the right to shut down a whole web site and all the speech it contains?
