You don't need me to tell you that your job satisfaction is based less on the tools you use and the skills you learn than it is on the team and company culture. But how can you tell, while you're going through the interview-and-offer process, if these are folks you want to hang out with?
Want to create a cool office to work in? Those who have done it recommend taking a look around you. Hold onto the aspects of the existing culture you like, dump the ones you don't, and at all times, display and inspire the culture you want to create.
IT department culture is probably not a match with overall corporate culture in about half of all businesses, Forrester analyst Marc Cecere estimates. The research firm interviewed 15 CIOs in depth and surveyed 41 IT decision makers for a recent report entitled "Does your IT culture need an overhaul?"
