  • How does the new kid on the cloud storage block stack up against the established players?

  • If you are interested in getting started with cloud computing – assembling a series of virtual servers for your enterprise applications that run offsite on a provider's data center – here are questions that might be useful as you proceed to evaluate different providers.

  • Supporting remote users is never easy, but when you have a population spread across more than 30 countries and in some very out-of-the-way places, it can become a nightmare. Luckily, this isn't the case thanks to some careful planning by the back office provider for numerous non-profits called TechSoup Global. The company, based in San Francisco, was founded in 1987 and since then has sent more than two billion dollars of donated computer hardware and software to hundreds of non-profits around the world, along with offering dozens of seminars. There is also an extensive online learning center, where there are hundreds of how-to articles about whether to upgrade to Windows 7, buying an inexpensive phone system and network troubleshooting tips and others.

  • Data loss prevention (DLP) is an emerging field with a lot of different products and players. The idea is to stop information from leaving your internal networks in close to real time, so you can identify the leaker or thief before too much damage (and ensuring lawsuits) happen.

  • If you travel frequently, there will be times when you don't want to lug your laptop along. Whether you find yourself at a local cybercafé or library, or have to sit down temporarily at a colleague's computer, you need a secure and simple way to get online and get your work done.

  • Desktop virtualization, the ability to run one operating system "inside" another, has a lot of attractive benefits. It is great for testing out new applications before you want to commit them to an enterprise-wide rollout. You can run multiple operating systems from a single PC to avoid having to purchase new equipment, or multiple browser versions on the same computer, without them interfering with each other. You can lock down your endpoints with a single master configuration that you can deploy widely to reduce your support costs. Or you can have a protected computer-on-an-USB-stick that you can carry around when you visit unsecure locations, to avoid becoming infected from the host PCs that you use at public kiosks or hotels.

  • If you skipped the big upgrade to Vista you can now consider yourself fortunate that a number of vendors have stepped up to help you migrate your desktops from XP to Windows 7. Microsoft doesn't make it easy to make the move from XP without some pain and suffering, but does have one tool that can automate the process, along with at least five other vendors.

  • With the announcement earlier this month that Facebook topped Google as the most-viewed site on the Internet, it is no wonder that social networking-like features such as discussion forums, chat, file sharing and status updates are seeping into more enterprise applications. Whether it is a fad, a trend, or a time-sucking annoyance isn't really important: these features are here to stay.

  • If you have to jointly author a spreadsheet with a colleague, what is the first thing that you do? Email it back and forth. This can be painful, particularly as you try to keep track of your partner's changes and hope the emails transit back and forth across the Internet. Add a third or fourth person, and things get worse. Luckily, there is a better way, and a number of providers have stepped up with tools to make spreadsheet sharing a lot easier than sending attachments.

  • Back in the 1980s when PCs were first entering corporations, IT workers had to fight off the mainframers who wanted to keep their 3270 IBM terminals on their desktops. A similar battle is being waged these days with so-called thin clients, which lie at the heart of a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) rollout.

  • While the frivolous iPhone apps usually get most of the media attention (yes, there really are over 175 apps that can produce rude bodily noises), there are quite a few apps that can help you do your job as an IT worker. While less notorious, they are worth your time to download and check out.

  • As we all should know by now, any email that isn't encrypted traverses the Internet in clear text that can easily be viewed with little skill and just some patience. If businesses want to make sure that no one else can look at their messages, they need to encrypt them in their entire path from sender to receiver. They also need to digitally sign them, to ensure that no one else has tampered with them in transit.

I didn't exclude Dropbox on purpose, just was focused on the others. They certainly offer a great service for simple file storage and some competitive pricing plans. I like Box because they have tried to extend their brand with different connectors.

This is also browser based and doesn't have too long a setup time, but is just for sharing text only in real time. I used this with a project team and even though we were all in the same room, it still made it easier to produce the document without having to email drafts back and forth across the table.
