  • My son was playing with my iPad and somehow switch the default search engine from Google to Yahoo!, and of course he has no idea how he did it. How can I change it back to Google?

  • My cat likes to sleep on my desk at home, and is constantly pushing around the mouse, which causes my computer to wake up. She is apparently a very modern cat. Is there a way in Windows 8 to stop the computer from waking up when the mouse is moved?

  • I've finally started practicing what I preach and using 2 step verification to log into my Google account since so much of my online life is so deeply integrated with Google - email, voice, wallet, play, et al. One of my Android phones is an old Motorola running 2.2 Froyo.

  • I saw that Google is testing a ring that acts as an authentication token. Obviously, a fair number of businesses use physical authentication tokens, but as far as I know they haven't been adopted for individual private use. Ok, I'm sure there are a few people out there using them, but I've never met them.

  • Is there a standout browser for Linux? I've had a long time to learn the ups and downs of the IE/Firefox/Chrome trifecta for Windows, but I'm still learning the different Linux distros, and have just been using Firefox on Linux. Are there better choices?

  • How can I make sure that the hardware I have is supported by Linux? I know that Linux is much, much better (easier) when it comes to hardware support than Windows, but how can I make sure a given graphics card, motherboard, etc. will work?

  • If you had the previous device linked to a Google Account (which you say you did), your contacts should automatically synched. There should be no need to import anything. Log onto Gmail on a laptop/desktop and on the left side under the big "Google" you should see "Gmail" with a drop down menu.

  • It seems that whenever there is a zero day vulnerability, there is a better than even chance that it will have something to do with Java. What is it about Java that makes it so prone to security threats? Oracle isn't exactly some start-up operating out of a garage, you would think they would have this Java thing figured out by now.

  • With the ISPs (including mine) implementing data caps, is there an easy way to check how much bandwidth I'm using when I'm at home?

  • I'm pretty new to the world of Mac, having used mostly Windows PCs for more years than I like to admit. I've never used FileVault before, but I just turned on FileVault on my work issued MacBook. Is this really a secure encryption method, or is it just a weak "consumer use" security blanket?

  • I'm trying to drive up site traffic, and I've done most of the standard search engine optimization steps (static URLs, metatags, etc.), but I'm looking for an objective way to determine if I've done a good job with it and suggestions for improvements . Any suggestions?

  • I've been on Sprint for a while, but their data speeds have just been terrible lately.  Where I am is slated to get upgraded to LTE shortly, but I'm at the end of my contract.   Except for data speeds, I have been happy with Sprint.

  • I'm not sure, but it definitely seems as if they are making incremental upgrades and calling them new models.  Two examples of this are the iPhone 4S and the new iPad.  The crazy thing about this is that I know people who absolutely MUST buy the new one because, ipso facto, it is the new one.

  • There was a patch last week to address Java zero-day vulnerabilities, but that patch apparently opened up new vulnerabilities. I've read the advice to disable Java, and I think I will do that, but when I looked I couldn't find where to do it. I'm feeling pretty dumb right now. :-( Anyone know how to disable Java on Chrome browers?

  • How do you disable the "helpful and informative" box that pops up and tells you that, "Windows is checking for a solution..." whenever a program locks up? I'm using Windows 7, btw.

  • Ok, this isn't exactly a work related question, although I guess if could be if I added "at work" to the end of my question. :-)
