Dog bites cop: Ironic use of force story of the day

Not every telling photo is accurate; not every accurate photo is telling. This one, which appears to be two trained police dogs restraining a Chicago cop in riot gear from attacking protesters, tells a more interesting story than the cops-punch-protesters headline image of the protest.

Science news: Chimps are mean, sneaky bastards

A chimp named Santino made news three years ago for gathering rocks in the morning to throw at humans in the afternoon. Now he's hiding the rocks and his own anger until it's time to whip out the rocks and have at the enemy, which dumb animals are not supposed to be able to do.

1. Microsoft patches a flaw in its remote-access code. predicts 30-day delay before malware appears to exploit it. 2. Researcher finds exploit available same day as the patch. 3. Exploit holds data "confidentially" submitted to warn Microsoft about the flaw in the first place.

A day after the revelation that a leader of Anonymous' most-aggressive, most obnoxious spinoff had been working with the FBI to build cases against trusted companions, anger among the faceless horde was great enough to make a second attack on the Vatican succeed.

The International Space Station is the most-obvious symbol of international, first-world cooperation on the exploration of space. It's also a potential death trap for astronauts, a kinetic weapon bomb and indication NASA's security staff and CIO should be replaced.

1 million YouPorn users exposed; data breach required no security penetration

Unlike the Brazzers porn site, which was cracked and breached earlier in the month, more than a million user names and passwords were taken from YouPorn after being duped to a public server by a debugging log accidentally left on in 2007.

EFF has posted simple instructions showing how to delete your web history at Google before March 1, when Google tucks all that casual data into a database that might give a very intimate portrait of what you like to know and and how you spend your time.

NSA: Anonymous may take down U.S. power grid in two years

The NSA is warning top government officials that hacktivist collective Anonymous may be developing the ability to attack the SCADA systems in electric utilities, may be able to cause limited blackouts within two years. Main evidence is bogus Operation Global Blackout.

Symantec may have tried to bribe hackers, but definitely betrayed its own customers

Anonymous is laughing it up at Symantec's reputed attempt to bribe hackers to not release source code. Symantec calls it extortion. That question is trivial compared to the reality that Symnantec broke trust with its customers and left them at risk for six years following the hack.

If your company were hacked in a way that could directly hurt customers, would you announce the worst-case scenario so they could prep while you develop a solution? Or dribble out the news slowly? Symantec dribbled, first with SSL tokens, then source code, leaving customers at risk.

Delta flights rerouted to avoid radiation attack from space

Delta diverted flights headed over the pole today to avoid the firehose of cosmic radiation drenching us with charged particles and static. It's mostly harmless unless you get run over by a car driven by a skygazer distracted by a rare aurora visible as far south as Scotland.

Fukushima radiation built into apartment housing evacuees from disaster

It won't make Americans underwater on their mortgages any less angry by comparison, but it's hard not to sympathize with families evacuated from near the stricken Fukushima nuclear plants, then housed in apartments built with concrete flavored with radioactive cesium.

Navy researchers refuse to admit chain-of-accidents spy drone delivery system is a joke

The Naval Research Lab has come up with a super-stealthy, super-silly way to get tiny drones into enemy territory undetected. First you fly a balloon up to 60,000 feet and tell it to drop a mid-size drone. That dron flies as far as it can and then it drops a smaller drone that drops a Russian nesting doll whose intent is to confuse the enemy so much it just gives up.

Virus attack gets convicted murderer a new trial

A stenographer who ignored the belt-and-suspenders policy of transcribing trials on both paper and disk was fired after a virus destroyed data on her computer, destroying the only transcript of a murder conviction, which was thrown out by appellate court that had no record to consider.

Crashed drone is a shot in ongoing cyberwar with Iran, not just a spy plane

Iran claims it shot down a U.S. RQ-170 spy drone, but won't release proof or say if a new Russian electronic counter-measures system brought it down. Killed or crashed, the drone is one shot in a a cyber/real war using malware, murder and explosive sabotage as weapons.
