September 02, 2009, 10:30 AM — Internet Explorer isn't anything like as popular as it used to be. Many users of Internet Explorer have moved from IE to Firefox or other browsers. In fact, in July 2009, Internet Explorer fell to an all time low of 66.6% But, even so, 24.8% of people are still using IE 6, a real contender for the planet's most insecure Web browser. Come on people!
Don't believe me? Would you believe Amy Bazdukas, Microsoft's general manager for Internet Explorer then? Bazdukas recently said, "Friends don't let friends use IE6."
I'd say that's a pretty clear sign that's it's time to get rid of IE6. Personally, I think Firefox is the best choice for most users. I can also recommend Google Chrome, and the latest version of Apple Safari.
Heck, Microsoft is even donating to food-banks for every download of IE 8. You can do yourself and some hungry people some good. What's not to like?
Regardless of which browser you pick though, you should make a habit of always updating it whenever there's a new release no matter how minor. Security is a process, not a product. If you don't keep your browser up-to-date, you'll no longer be safe.
So, if you're one of those people out there who are still running IE 6 and you don't want anything to do with a new Web browser, please, please, do yourself a favor and at least upgrade to IE 8. The only thing you have to lose is some of your PC's insecurities.
